ABOUT THE TREASURE
What: Historic TownWhere: Croatia, Split
When: Rome, Late Middle Ages, National Revival / Brankovani, Baroque
This complex was built in the course of many centuries and retains monuments of culture of different epochs and styles. The ruins of Diocletian's palace (3-4 century) date from the late antiquity. The fortification walls, the cathedral and several smaller churches (12-13 century) and the Gothic palaces (15 century) date from the Middle Ages. The renaissance and baroque palaces are from the new times. Here we meet history at every step, and what is more – its traces strangely intertwine, as the ruins of Diocletian’s palace were used as a quarry for the later medieval constructions.
